Why do visitors rub john harvard's shoe when they visit harvard university?

Hi, I'm a student at Harvard.

I see visitors at Harvard everyday. As a freshman, I lived in Hollis Hall, which was across the Yard from University Hall (where the statue is). As it turns out, the shoe is rubbed for good luck.

But bad news: that shiny, rubbed-smooth foot is a favorite place for drunk Harvard students to urine on. That's why I never have and never will touch that foot.

Why do visitors rub john harvard's shoe when they visit harvard university?
Because it's the easier part to touch. People have to touch some parts of statues when they see them. They can't just leave well enough alone.

There's no reason like people kissing the toe of the Pieta
