I am signing up for a a graduate journalism course at harvard this month. i'm curious about the reoutation of the extension school. Has anyone attended this part of harvard? if the course goes well i may just stay on for the master's program in journalism. the extension school seems to be an open registration program. the courses cost much less and there is virtually no competition to enter the program unlike the traditional admissions program at harvard. all opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Does the Harvard University Extension school have a decent reputation? I am signing up for a graduate course.?
Matt that is not true and I dont appreciate the utter contempt you show to a division of Harvard. First of all, it is not totally open enrollment. You cannot just sign up for a class and boom you're in ready to complete your MA. You have to take 3 courses and get a 3.0 GPA in order to APPLY. From there you have to apply and be admitted based on the schools admissions policy, i.e. formal essay, submitting of transcripts, resume and extension GPA.
Even then the classes are not easy A's. You have to attend a thesis seminar which usually weeds people out and from there you can take the remainder of your courses for admission.
Matt, and other naysayers. Do you think that Harvard would've allowed a diploma mill to funtion in thier FAS for 100+ years? Do you really think Harvard is that stupid enough to tarnish its image and still remain as the #1 university in the world? Get real!
And by Harvards OWN standards YOU are allowed to put on your resume and state that you recieved a masters from Harvard. If Harvard allows you to then by all means one should because thats what it is a masters degree.
Go for it! It will be worthwhile and dont let people like Matt deter you.
Reply:i wish i could delete my prior comment. this wasn;t meant for james. james has given a very informative and correct response. thanks a lot Report It
Reply:i agree here.... i think that taking the step towards furthering ur education is great, and dont let anyone tarnish ur dream. also, i agree that harvard isnt stupid enough to ruin their image like that Report It
Reply:Harvard Extension is an outstanding program taught by Harvard Instructors. It isn't an easy program, and Matt is way off the mark. It proved to be a good stepping stone toward my acceptance at a prestigious PhD program. Report It
Reply:Everyone knows what you just said, that the Harvard Extension is not competitive. Anyone can go there. So it doesn't add any prestige to your resume. It is equivalent to a community college. Go if you want. I'm sure you will learn some things. But don't expect anybody to be impressed, and don't tell people you graduated from "Harvard" as if you were a Harvard College graduate.
James, if you think that a Harvard Extension degree is equivalent to a degree from Harvard College and carries the same prestige, you are sadly mistaken. Everyone knows that HE basically exists to take advantage of the fact that some people who couldnt possibly get into Harvard proper, will pay to get in by this back door just so they can say they went to "Harvard". OK, it's true that it is not open enrollment, but it is the next thing to it. Most respectable grad schools require a 3.5 entering GPA and you certainly wouldnt get into any other division of Harvard with a 3.0. If Harvard thought it was the equal of their other programs, they wouldn't call it "Extension" would they?
I stand by my answer!
